Foreigner / I Want to Know What Love Is Foreigner最初由英國籍的Mick Jones、Ian McDonald和Dennis Elliott，與美國籍的Lou Gramm、Ed Gagliardi和Al Greenwood所組成，1976年成立於紐約，七十年代末期，該團以重搖滾及主唱Lou Gramm響亮的歌聲闖蕩樂壇，並連續以1977年首張專輯『Foreigner』、1978年『Double Vision』、1979年『Head Games』攻上Billboard專輯榜前五名，進入八十年代，Foreigner刻意走向流行的抒情搖滾曲風，儘管團員只剩Mick Jones、Dennis Elliott、Lou Gramm與新進貝斯手Rick Wills，樂團聲勢依舊不減，1981年7月所發行的專輯4首度站上Billboard專輯榜冠軍，蟬連十週，創造Waiting For A Girl Like You(流行單曲榜亞軍、主流搖滾榜冠軍)和Urgent(流行單曲榜Top4、主流搖滾榜冠軍)等暢銷名曲,I Want to Know What Love Is搭配簡單歌詞卻動人的旋律，為Foreigner贏得首支百萬單曲，此曲除了是該團第一支橫跨英美兩地的冠軍單曲，也是唯一的冠軍單曲。2004年由美國Rolling Stone(滾石雜誌)票選的『五百大歌曲』，I Want to Know What Love Is名列第476名。
